Witness the coiled appeal of this snake-like galaxy 80 million light-years from Earth

Home News Science & Astronomy A picture of galaxy NGC 1087 caught by the ALMA observatory in Chile. (Image credit: ESO) A spiral nebula is snuggled like a sleeping snake in a striking brand-new image from the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). ALMA’s high elevation of 16,500 feet (5,000 meters) and incredibly dry environment in Chile’s Atacama Desert offer an outstanding perspective for the observatory’s 66 radio telescopes to permeate the paradises. Swirling calmly 80 million light-years from Earth like a sleeping, coiled snake, NGC 1087 is an intermediate spiral nebula that covers 86,800 light-years in the constellation Cetus. This location of the sky is called after a sea beast from Greek folklore and is house to other water-themed constellations, like Aquarius and Pisces. Related: Serpens galaxy wriggles through brand-new Hubble picture Seen as a composite image made up of shots taken at various wavelengths, ALMA’s observations record the galaxy’s lava-like reddish color, which represents cold clouds of star-spawning molecular gas. The blue-tinted areas suggest locations of older, more fully grown stars, all imaged by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on ESO’s Very Large Telescope, situated at the extensive ALMA observatory website, ESO agents stated in a declaration (opens in brand-new tab). These awesome shots were acquired in combination with a job called PHANGS, or the Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby Galaxies Survey. Researchers designated to the group are trying to provide a brochure of high-resolution observations targeted at neighboring galaxies, with telescopes targeting a large range of wavelengths. Analysis of the various wavelengths will expose information on the galaxy’s internal physical residential or commercial properties of stars, gas and dust, ESO agents stated in the declaration. Comparing those outcomes throughout numerous readings lets astronomers examine the procedures that trigger, boost or limit the dawn of child stars. Follow us on Twitter @Spacedotcom and on Facebook.
